Engineering Assistant

Overview:
Reporting to the Director of Engineering, the Engineering Assistant will assist mechanical and process engineers to design, build, test, and improve prototype electromechanical components and systems for our R&D and pilot production facility. These prototype components may be assembled from off-the-shelf parts or may need to be custom designed and hand-built. Designs must be operable in aquaculture environment (water/algae).

Primary Responsibilities

  • Quickly read and understand prototype designs, plans, drawings, and sketches prepared by mechanical and process engineers
  • Quickly build prototype components and process system interfaces to meet design specifications
  • Work with outside contractors/vendors (i.e. machine shops) to insure timely delivery of products and services
  • Assist science and engineering personnel to operate the resulting prototype components and systems, and to evaluate their performance and production suitability
  • Execute experimental protocols, including data collection, collation, and interpretation

Desired Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree in engineering or at least 3 years of equivalent experience in an engineering environment.
  • Strong general construction skills, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and excavation; ability to operate heavy equipment a plus
  • Familiar with pumps, piping, centrifuges, water/air flow, etc.; aquaculture experience a plus
  • Proven ability to fabricate prototype components quickly, using readily available materials
  • Creative and highly self-motivated, with strong ability to follow instructions and to improvise

Process Engineer

Individual will be responsible for designing and prototyping a scaleable and cost-effective algae harvest and lipid extraction process, and for working closely with R&D scientists and other engineers to integrate all production process steps and workstation designs into a well-balanced, cost-effective continuous algae oil production process.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Work with project leaders and executives across the company to define specific and detailed project plans, to express them clearly in Microsoft Project including accurate resource loading and costing, and to get positively confirmed buy-in to the resulting schedules and staffing plans and budgets from the project leaders and executives.
  • Track actual progress against plan for all the tasks, update the MSP files accordingly, and publish daily and weekly reports as needed by the project leaders and executives, including exports to Excel to support supplemental analysis.
  • Work with individual project leaders to identify slipping tasks, define appropriate corrective action plans, and express those plans clearly in the MSP files.
  • Up to 50% travel may be required.

Desired Qualifications

Primary Responsibilities

  • Support/mentor and implement disciplined problem-solving and continuous improvement initiatives based on root-cause analysis and closed-loop corrective action methodologies.

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Industrial or Chemical Engineering or Biology. Other appropriate disciplines considered.
  • 5+ years experience in Quality Assurance with fluid systems and live-organism systems experience strongly preferred.
  • A key participant or must have led a successful ISO certification effort for a large-scale commercial fluid systems process business within the last 5 years is preferred.
